Mision
Somos un grupo de madres trabajando juntas para el mejoramiento bienestar de nuestras familias y comunidad.
Mission
We are a group of women working together for the improvement and well-being of our families and community.
Along with university -based faculty and students, Latina immigrant mothers comprise the Amigas de la Comunidad community advisory board (CAB), which is situated in northern Virginia. Since it's founding in 2014, the CAB’s leadership has enabled important research and action initiatives focused on family well-being, access to resources, and immigrant rights.
Community-based participatory action research (CBPAR) is an approach to conducting research by equitably partnering researchers and those directly affected by and knowledgeable of local circumstances. To inform research design, implementation, and dissemination, this approach challenges academic and community partners to invest in team building, share resources, and mutually exchange ideas and expertise. The goal is that community partners ultimately lead or guide all aspects of the work.
Specifically, CBPAR creates community-driven partnerships that build trusted relationships “from the community up” to:

For the past 5 years, members of Amigas de la Comunidad identify families in need and we work together to support them during the Christmas holiday. We come together to wrap the gifts and celebrate the holiday season, usually with yummy pozole and lots of laughter!

In summer of 2025, after identifying that many families in the community were unable to access groceries and other household necessities due to safety concerns, we worked to collect and deliver donations. To sustain this effort, we helped develop a partnership between our longtime community partner and a local faith group that continues to make needed items available to community members.

Along with our team of graduate students, we shared our work with audiences around Virginia. See more here.
Based on community requests, we held parent workshops on: using school technology, navigating your children's use of technology, knowing your legal rights, and talking to your children about family separation.

We celebrated the end of the year and holiday season by getting together and wrapping presents for our Annual Holiday Gift Giving!
We delivered Padres Ayudando a Padres: Construyendo Familias Fuertes [Parents Helping Parents: Building Strong Families], a seven-session parenting group designed to with, by, and for immigrant parents to support (1) parenting skills, (2) resources/advocacy, and (3) parents’ mental health.

After completing a community survey, we shared these results with the community. We were able to identify further actions for our group based on the conversations and feedback we received.
We also worked with our school-based partners to develop and share a resource guide with community members.
We also shared our emerging scholarship with scholars and family practitioners at the National Council on Family Relations.
Working with community partners, our university-based research team begam meeting with community members and identified a group of individuals who were committed to working for the wellbeing of their community. Amigas de la Comunidad was born, and our partnership began!
We were delighted to receive grant funding from the Bruhn Morris Family Foundation! This grant enabled us to build the community advisory board and begin our partnership, with an initial focus on supporting families with young children.
